A native plant of Ethiopia, Aloe elegans has silvery-blue foliage which provides a nice contrast to darker colored foliage plants, and is excellent in xeriscape and fire resistant plantings in addition to rock, succulent, cactus gardens and containers. This medium-sized aloe is usually solitary growing with upright fleshy 1-2′ leaves. The leaves of Aloe elegans have teeth on their margins and when the plant is under stress, the leaves turn a nice reddish brown.

This aloe blooms in winter and early spring. The heads of the conical flowers are born on branched stems, and range in color from pale yellow to orange-red. The flowers of Aloe elegans are attractive to bees, butterflies and birds.

Good drainage is needed wherever Aloe elegans is planted, and the plant can also tolerate light frost.
