Hesperaloe parviflora is a pretty smaller yucca-like plant, which looks beautiful with other agaves, aloes and yuccas. It is also striking in used alone or in groups. It is spineless and works well in pedestrian settings and can take reflected heat. H. parviflora can also be grown in containers. It tolerates a wide range of soils including clay (if not kept too wet) and alkali. Being mostly littler-free, it is a great plant to use by swimming pools.

This yucca-like plant grows as a clump of 2-3’ long arching grass-like leaves. Hesperaloe parviflora does not form a stem but instead the clump thickens and eventually divides into more leaf rosettes. Leaves are gray green and have curling white fibers attached on the margins. In cold weather some plants take on purple hues.

Hesperaloe parviflora flowers from April through October with beautiful pink to red tubular six-petaled flowers on 5-foot stalks. The blooming season is long and the highlight of the plant. It’s flowers are much more elegant and colorful than H. funifera. Each rosette flowers just once but after a rosette flowers it spreads by offsets, which will bloom in future years. Flowers are very attractive to nectar-seeking birds.

The leaves contain an especially fine fibre that can be used in paper production. Strong, resilient, and nontoxic, these fibres can be employed in filtration, teabags, and also as a base fibre for recycling short fiber papers.
