Sedum oxypetalum is one of the only tree sedums. It can grow up to a height of 4′ as a small tree-shaped shrub with a thick stubby trunk and upright stems. It is prized for its architectural shape and its papery peeling bark.  Sedum oxypetalum makes a nice small bonsai-type tree in a large container.

The leaves of Sedum oxypetalum are small, of medium green color, and notched at the tip. In summer, the branch tips of Sedum oxypetalum become covered with small star-shaped pale-yellow flowers with pinkish colored centers. It goes somewhat deciduous in winter particularly if kept dry or when temperatures drop much below freezing.

The best flowers and winter hardiness are achieved when Sedum oxypetalum is kept drier so this plant needs well-drained soil and only occasional watering in summer. As a deciduous plant it can be hardy in temperatures as low as 15 to 20°F.

Sedum oxypetalum thrives in dry rock gardens and succulent plantings, and it’s also well suited in rock or gravel beds around pools and modern architecture.
