Xerosicyos danguyi, commonly called “Silver Dollar Plant” or “Dollar Vine” or “Penny Plant”, is an unusual climbing succulent vine with cylindrical stems and thick, succulent, round silvery-green leaves. Leaves are 1 to 2″ long and wide with climbing tendrils located opposite them. The main stem grows to about 2 feet before it branches.

This is an interesting succulent vine that will scramble up and hide fences, walls etc. It also makes a nice hanging basket or container plant and can be kept indoors in bright light. Xerosicyos danguyi kept in pots should be repotted every other year with fresh, well-draining soil and be fertilized once a month during the growing season.

In spring to summer, Xerosicyos danguyi blooms with small yellowish-green flowers carried on umbels in the leaf axils. The plants are dioecious and require male and female plants to set seed. This plant can be propagated by taking soft wood cuttings, allowing them to callus over, and potting them up. Xerosicyos danguyi can also be sown from seed. Seeds germinate in 14-21 days at 70°F (21°C). Plants grown from seed will form a caudex but plants grown from cuttings will not.

Originating from southwestern Madagascar, this member of the Cucurbitaceae family was described by Jean-Henri Humbert in 1939.
