This aloe grows with short stems that crawl across the ground and it also offsets to form large clumps. Individual leaves can reach a foot and a half in length and are blue green in color in lower light conditions but in full sun take on reddish and purplish hues. The leaf margins have small reddish teeth.
Aloe schelpei blooms in November, a bit earlier than many winter-blooming aloes, so its flowers are rarely damaged by frost. It is a beautiful aloe in bloom with many 2 foot spikes of reddish-orange flowers. The flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds.
This Aloe schelpei plant is endangered in its small native distribution due to habitat loss from agriculture.

This is a nice medium-sizes ground covering Aloe for succulent, cactus, and xeriscape gardens. It grows on rock outcroppings in its native habitat so it would be excellent in rock gardens as well. Aloe schelpei can be shown off as a container plant as well.
