Serra Gardens History

For more than 25 years, Don Newcomer’s Serra Gardens Landscape Succulents has earned its reputation as the insider’s resource for exotic and hard-to-find succulents for the landscape.
After moving from its legendary Malibu location in 2007, the nursery is now located on a private estate in idyllic Fallbrook, California, Serra Gardens remains one of the most unique xeriscaping nurseries in Southern California.
Proprietor and recognized succulent expert Don Newcomer began his collection 45 years ago as a hobby he shared with his father, the late Dr. Victor Newcomer. The two attended cacti and succulent society meetings throughout Southern California when Don was in his teens. That was when he met legendary collectors, Ed and Betty Gay, who ultimately willed Don their collection. That collection became the stock for some of Serra Gardens’ most rare and unusual offerings, some of which are available for sale today.
Over the years, Serra Gardens and Don have been featured in coffee table books — most notably Desert Gardens, by Gary Lyons and Melba Levick — and has received local and national press attention
