Aeonium Kiwi – An Australian delight for Mediterranean Gardens

Small heads about three inches in diameter cluster up to form bushy plants about 24″ in height and diameter. each small head develops white variegation in its center. Leaves develop a pink blush on the outer  margins when exposed to brighter light. Then leaves will turn solid green after being exposed to sunlight for some time. Controlling the light for Aeonium Kiwi is very important for bringing out the best colors. Observe seasonal changes and move them in and out of light.

Provenance

An Australian hybrid of Aeonium haworthii. It is very hardy and able to tolerate many extremes. Variegated plants are sometimes gauged by their tendency to revert back to green. Kiwi is fairly stable and not too eager to go back to green.

Cultivation

Very easy to grow under all conditions but it will not tolerate hard frosts much below 25 °F. Situate Kiwi near a wall or under an eave for little frost protection. Aeonium Kiwi is a great plant to situate where people might walk. Its gentle leaves are very easy to touch.

Aeonium haworthii  resists ants and mealy bugs very well.  We believe Kiwi will have the same resistance since it is a close relative of haworthii. All aeoniums are very vulnerable to snail attacks.  Spread Sluggo around aeonium bases after rainy periods as a preventative measure. We reccomend that you DO NOT USE snail baits that contain Metaldehyde. These are all poisonous for dogs and other pets. Put out a pan of beer if you don’t have too many plants to treat. Sluggo is non-toxic for dogs but its a little more pricey. Provide some ongoing additional nutrients when growing in poor soils. Use a slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote triple 14. Fertilize sparingly as too much nitrogen will turn your Kiwi all green.
