Agave horrida isn’t really so horrible but it does have some serious teeth. That’s part of what makes Agave horrida so interesting. Symmetrical globe-shaped form with few to no offsets. Smaller agave that is great for containers, rock and succulent gardens, xeriscaping. Individual rosettes reach about two feet in diameter. Plants can be maintained for many years in small containers.

Agave horrida has dark green leaves with lighter undersides and many dark brown spines. It often becomes a globe-shaped solitary plant with age. This plant needs excellent drainage. Its sharp spines make it deer and rodent resistant. Like most agaves it is monocarpic and dies after sending up an unbranched five foot inflorescence.

A high desert native of Mexico, Agave horrida is edible. Known as ‘Mexcalmetl’ in its native habitat, the young leaves of the Agave horrida are eaten broiled, and they are used to make ‘Mexcalli’, a mescal liquor.
