Crassula tetragona makes a wonderful container plant. It works well in as a small to medium bonsai plant and looks great in a setting with rocks in the pot. Crassula tetragona grows in succulent, cactus and zeriscape gardens. Plants will branch at trimmed tips and can be used as a low, informal hedge in frost-free areas.

This easy-to-grow succulent, described by Linnaeus in 1753, was one of the earliest to be cultivated in Europe. The leaves are narrow, tapering to a point and apple green in color. It grows with opposite leaves in four ranks creating an orderly appearance, however as the plant ages older leaves fall off leaving the stems exposed. Leggy plants can be cut back and the cuttings replanted and the stems are woody with brownish bark. Carefully pruned plants do resemble small pine trees, hence the plant’s common name.

Crassula tetragona blooms in summer with small white crassula-type flowers that age to orange. They bloom in small branched clusters. The specific epithet refers to the orderly four-ranked leaves of the plant.

Possibly slightly hardier than zone 9b, especially if given some protection from harder frosts.

Crassula tetragona is drought tolerant but can take irrigation in well-drained soils. Avoid overwatering in cool, wet winters. Increase watering when in bloom.
