Dudleya hassei is a native California succulent with blue green finger-like foliage. Also known as The Catalina Live Forever, it is found on the rocks and cliffs of Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. Unlike many Dudleyas, this plant is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions, including salt spray. It will cover sloping ground as well as filling in cracks and spaces in rocks.
Dudleya hassei is very popular with hummingbirds. It flowers in the spring with 1’ tall stems topped with clusters of star-shaped white flowers with yellow centers. Dudleya hassei prefers infrequent deep watering. It is easy to grow and tolerant of many conditions but it will perform best in coastal situations.
Dudleya hassei makes an attractive small-scale ground cover in native plant and xeriscape gardens. It’s also at home in rock and cactus gardens, and it makes a very attractive container or hanging basket plant.
