Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose

Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose aka “Penis Plant” is a clustering monstrous cactus with prostrate growth habit, branching at the base and slowly growing up to 4 feet tall. The plant develops numerous cucumber shapes with long spines about two to three inches wide and six to ten inches long. The stems are a light glaucous green with only a few spiny areoles in the basal portion. The upper part of the stem is a smooth cylinder, the lower part can be spiny and is often ribbed.

There are two clones of this cultivar, Clone A with shorter clumping stem segments and Clone B, a more solitary grower with longer segments. This is clone A.

Because of its vigorous rootstock, Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose is also suitable as a grafting rootstock for some other rare cacti that you would like to accelerate.

This plant is very cold hardy and does well in containers. Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose can also be grown in the ground in cactus, rock or xeriscape gardens. Be sure the soil is well drained and winter watering is kept to a minimum. It makes an excellent dense hedge about four feet tall. It will not overtake your view and stays very compact. It is best to aggressively control weeds around the base as they can become intertwined with the plant making them difficult to remove. Although this plant can withstand drought it tends to shrivel so some summer water is recommended. It would be best to mulch around the base to help the topsoil from becoming very dry. We have never had any problems with insects bothering our specimens and a large cluster on our bank has survived in a hardy state for many years without any supplemental water. Gloves are an absolute essential working around bridgesii monstrose. This plant has also been recently renamed to Echinopsis lageniformis monstrose.

There is a minimum purchase of any 4 plants for online orders. All plants shipped bare root. Other sizes may be available for pick up from our growing grounds in Fallbrook, CA. For more information, give us a call at 760-990-4762.
