Kalanchoe orgyalis, commonly called “Copper Spoons”,  is an evergreen plant which has attractive succulent, spoon-shaped, rusty-copper leaves held opposite each other on the stems. The leaves’ coloration is due to small felt-like hairs which cover the leaves’ upper surfaces. Over time they fade to match the silvery-gray color of the hairs on the leaves’ undersides. Kalanchoe orgyalis is a moderately slow-growing plant, and over time will form a nicely branched small shrub.

In spring and summer, Kalanchoe orgyalis blooms on panicles with bright yellow-green flowers.

Although somewhat frost hardy, leaf burn occurs with frost so plants should be protected from freezing weather. In cooler climates, Kalanchoe orgyalis can be grown in a container and brought indoors when temperatures drop below freezing. It appreciates light fertilizer applications during the growth season in summer.

A native of southwestern Madagascar, Kalanchoe orgyalis is drought tolerant, but likes some irrigation in well-drained soils especially during the growing season in summer. It can easily be propagated by taking stem cuttings and replanting them. It can also be grown from seed.

It resembles and is closely to related to K. bracteata. The specific epithet is derived from ‘orgya’, a measure of about 6 feet and is thought to refer to the plant’s growth size.
