Aloe verdoorniae

Horticultural Data | Shipping & Availability | Top

Aloe verdoorniae has unusual recurving bluish-gray leaves with a red, thorny margin. In bright sun, the leaves of Aloe verdoorniae turn an interesting dark blue/black.

Aloe verdoorniae is an easy-to-grow aloe. It forms stemless rosettes with fleshy, triangular leaves. Sharp brown teeth line the leaf margins. In drought, half of the leaf dies back and becomes twisted, leaving the remaining part almost square in shape.

In winter, this aloe puts on a colorful show with good-sized conical orange-red flower spikes.

Aloe verdoorniae is used among rural South African communities to treat arthritis, skin cancer, burns, eczema, psoriasis, digestive problems, high blood pressure and diabetes. Recent tests show this aloe contains a variety of compounds with confirmed antioxidant capacity and other putative health benefits (such as blood glucose, cholesterol and cortisol lowering properties).
