Pachyphytum fittkaui is an easy to grow succulent with plump, lime green foliage. A native of Mexico, Pachyphytum fittkaui is often found on south-facing cliffs and volcanic rock faces. The leaves grow in a rosette, are mostly cylindrical, about 1-3 inches in length. Pachyphytum fittkaui flowers in spring on arching stems. Flowers are small, pinkish or reddish in color and resemble an echeveria. During periods of drought stress the leaf margins take on an orange and lavender blush. The genus name come from the leaves and translates to “thick plant” as many of the genus have thick, rounded, pebble shape leaves. Pachyphytum fittkaui makes a nice container plant. Pachyphytum fittkaui also works as a small ground cover in rockeries, xeriscape plantings, succulent gardens and around sunny pools. Can be propagated from seed or from cuttings which are easy to root once they are allowed to callus over and then planted in well-draining soil. Leaves also work good for propagation purposes an are not as likely to be shoved around by watering as they are so thick and heavy. Using the leaf method takes longer however.
