Sedum dendroideum
The Stonecrop Tree is obviously not like a tree. But, it is like a bush of moderate dimensions. Grows out to about 4 feet tall and 5 or six feet wide. Branches are particularly stout with silvery bark. Leaves are green in winter and develop some attractive red edges in summer.
dendroideum can tolerate some low temperatures. For example, we’ve had dendroideum growing in our fields with lows down to 28°F recorded. Other references record it down to USDA 9a which is 20°F. Thats very low for a plant containing watery fluid. As a matter of fact many other soft succulents will burn at these lows.
In addition, Sedum dendroideum is very drought tolerant as the bush displayed in our photo received no summer water throughout 2021 and held up very well in temperature over 110°F without dropping a lot of leaves. In short, Sedum dendroideum is an underutilized hardy succulent bush that makes an attractive specimen for fire resistance around homes.
