Euphorbia mammillaris var. variegata makes a nice, odd specimen plant in a container and can be grown indoors in a warm and sunny window. It will work as a garden plant in frost-free or near frost free areas and could be used as a low planting in cactus and succulent gardens.

The plant can be reproduced by seed or cuttings. Euphorbia mammillaris var. variegata may be propagated by branch cuttings, offsets should be dried to let the wound heal (cuttings planted too soon rot before they can grow roots). When potting up, try to keep the cutting somewhat upright so that the roots are able to grow downward.

Requires well draining soils to avoid root and stem rot in cooler wet weather. Protect from strong winds as stems will break or scrape each other causing wounds and scarring.

This is a fairly fast growing plant with white and green variegated circular stems. Euphorbia mammillaris var. variegata’s stems are covered with rows of small tubercules and resemble a corn cob. Stems are an attractive cream to greenish-white color splashed with emerald green. Brach tips and new growth have some spines which are actually the peducles of prior seasons’ flowers. In full sun exposure or during cold spells, new growth takes on pink hues giving the plant even more color interest.

In summer it blooms with greenish-yellow cyathia at the tip of each stem and like most euphorbias it has a latex sap that can be irritating to the skin and eyes.

Indoor plants moved outside should be slowly acclimated to full sun to avoid scorching. There is a minimum purchase of any 4 plants for online orders. All plants shipped bare root. Other sizes may be available for pick up from our growing grounds in Fallbrook, CA. For more information, give us a call at 760-990-4762.
